is already the coach and part owner. Next month, the reemerged face of the franchise will also have his number hanging in the rafters.
The Nets announced Monday that they'll retire Kidd's No. 5 on Oct. 17 before a preseason game against the Heat. Kidd will become the sixth Net to have his jersey retired - joining Julius Erving, Drazen Petrovic,????????? Nike Blazer ????? low sb nike blazer mid 77 premium vintage, John Williamson, Bill Melchionni and Buck Williams.
But Kidd, unequivocally,OLYMPUS ????? ??? ??????? Canon ???? ??? ??????? Nikon ??? ??? ??????? Panasonic ?????? ??? ??????? SONY ??? ??? ???????, is the franchise's best player since it left the ABA for the NBA in 1976, a pass-first magician who brought the most out of lesser teammates.
"My warmest congratulations to Jason as we commemorate his outstanding career as an NBA player and his unparalleled contribution to the Nets franchise," owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a statement. "As one chapter closes, another will soon be written and I know that we are all looking forward to Jason's continued successes."
Kidd will likely be suspended for the first two regular season games for his DUI conviction, which would overlap the home opener against the Heat on Nov. 1. However, Kidd, according to the Nets, chose to have his number retired during the preseason for other reasons - the rookie coach didn't want a ceremony to interfere with his duties during a meaningful game, and he didn't want to take focus off players once the season began.
A coach, player or owner is not allowed in the arena while suspended.
"This is a very humbling honor and one that I will always cherish,??? Sigma ???," Kidd said. "There can be no greater recognition of an athlete's time with any team than to have his number retired, and this gesture by the Nets organization validates a very significant portion of my career that was spent as a player with this franchise."
Kidd, 40, brought the Nets out of irrelevancy and Stephon Marbury-induced dysfunction when he was traded to New Jersey in 2001. He led the Nets to consecutive Finals in his first two seasons, taking great pleasure on trouncing the Knicks almost every opportunity.
But there was a messy divorce in 2008, following seasons of mulling in the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff pack, or NBA's purgatory. He demanded a change in scenery and faked a migraine in protest, leading to a trade to the Mavericks for Devin Harris.
Kidd won a title with Dallas, and then finished his career with the Knicks. But in July, Kidd was unexpectedly named coach of the Nets,??? Leica ??? ??????? ???????, emerging as a candidate late in the search. Kidd also plans to purchase a small ownership stake in the Nets.
The retiring Kidd's jersey was always expected, and it became more obvious when Kevin Garnett chose to wear No. 2 in honor of late Timberwolves teammate and friend Malik Sealy, rather than his preferred No. 5.
Asked about it last month by the Daily News, Kidd said he'd be honored, but wouldn't say whether others on his successful Nets teams are also deserving -- i.e. Kenyon Martin,???????? ???? Nike Jordan Apparel ????? ???, Richard Jefferson or Vince Carter.
